What is BDS?

BDS or Bachelor of Dental Surgery is a five year bachelor’s degree course with a year-long rotational internship that is compulsory for students to complete to be able to graduate with distinct marks.  It is a professional degree program for undergraduates that trains students to become dentists The BDS job scope is vast in the private and public sectors of various reputed organizations in India and abroad, along with excellent perks. They study and put into practice dental operations like fillings, extractions, scaling, root canal therapies, crown and bridge work, as well as elementary surgical techniques.
 
Exams & Licensing: After completing the BDS degree, graduates must meet certain criteria in order to be certified or licensed to practice dentistry in their respective jurisdictions. These criteria frequently include passing national or regional licensing exams that evaluate their clinical knowledge.

Eligibility for BDS

=>Candidates are required to pass Class 12 or equivalent examination with science subjects (Physics, Chemistry and Biology) and English core in both Class 11 and 12 from a recognized board.
He/she has completed 17 years of age at the time of admission or will complete that age on or before 31 December of the year of his/her admission to the first year of the Undergraduate Medical Course
=>Upper age limit: As per Letter No. U-11022/2/2022-UGMEB, dated 09 March 2022 received from National Medical Commission (NMC), Under Graduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB) regarding the upper age limit, there is no upper age limit.
=>The candidate shall have passed Class 12 or its equivalent examination from any recognized Board with Physics, Chemistry and Biology, and shall have obtained a minimum of 50% marks taken together in Physics, Chemistry and Biology in the case of general category and 40% Marks in the case of the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes.
=>In respect of persons with disability candidates specified under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 (49 of 2016), the minimum qualifying marks in the said examinations shall be 45% in case of General Category and 40% in the case of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes.
=>Candidates need to have qualified NEET by securing a minimum qualifying cutoff percentile to get admission to BDS course.
=>For foreign students, any other equivalent qualification approved by the University will be allowed.

Reservation Policy of the Central Government in All India Quota seats (Govt./Govt. aided/National Institutes/Central Universities) counselling is as follows:
SC- 15%
ST- 7.5%
PwBD- 5% Horizontal Reservation
OBC (Non Creamy Layer) – 27%
EWS- 10%

Counselling for All India Quota Seats of BDS Course

Government, Government aided Institutes, Central Universities, National Institutes, Deemed to be Universities will be conducted by Medical Counselling Committee(MCC) /DGHS. However for state quota seats of Bihar counselling would be conducted by BCECE as UGMAC.

BDS Specialization

There are no specialization offered in BDS course. Candidates are required to opt for specializations in postgraduate programs for BDS Course. These programs include an M.D.S. (Master of Dental Surgery)  and a D.D.S(Doctor of Dental Surgery).

Career Options After BDS

=>Own clinical practice
=>In academic after post graduation, students can join government or private colleges as demonstrators or lecturers or after 10 years of clinical practice he/she can eligible for PhD.
=>In research field after bds MSc (Biotechnology/Bioinformatics/Health Sciences) is a very challenging course and is also available for BDS students at some universities. This is a 2-year, full time courses In the research field, a student can join as Jr. Research Fellow on research projects which are conducted by various institutions/colleges/university departments which are financially supported by ICMR, CSIR, CCRAS, DST, etc. On getting experience, they can get Sr. Research Fellowship and this work can lead to a PhD.
=>In management for those who are not interested in clinical practice MPH (Masters in Public Health), MHA (Masters in Health Administration) and MBA (Hospital and Healthcare management) are in great demand. Other than this, courses like Sports Medicine, Disaster Management, Industrial Management, Preventive and Promotive healthcare, Masters in Personnel Management are also good options. UPSC examinations and state level administration examinations are conducted every year. BDS students are eligible to appear for these examinations and enter in the government services as administrator.

Salary After BDS

It totally depends on your next move . If you doing post graduation then you get salary range from 40k -90k per month, if you start your own private practice then depends on number of patients visit, if you start doing private practice in other hospital you may get 50k- 100k per month it may be higher if you are post graduate. If you doing nothing you may not get any salary.
