Horrific Clash Between Medical Students and Police at SKMCH Leads to Chaos and Injuries, SP Assured Action

On late Sunday night, a major altercation broke out between medical students and the police at Shri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH), resulting in a chaotic scene. The situation escalated when police entered the premises and resorted to a baton charge, injuring approximately two dozen junior doctors and medical students, with several sustaining serious head injuries.

Incident Details

  • Trigger Incident: Around midnight, three medical students of SKMCH were returning from the market on a single motorcycle. Near Gate Number 3, an officer from the Ahiyapur police patrol stopped them for riding triple load. A heated argument ensued, and one of the students was taken to the police station.
  • Student Reaction: The detained student managed to send a message on the medical students’ WhatsApp group. Subsequently, a group of students gathered near Gate Number 1.
  • Police Response: In response to the growing crowd of students, police officers arrived at SKMCH in four vehicles. They entered the medical college and began a baton charge, causing panic among the students. Many students fled in fear, and the hospital environment descended into chaos, affecting both patients and their families.

Injuries and Medical Treatment

  • Around two dozen students were injured in the baton charge, with several suffering serious head injuries and heavy bleeding. These injured students were admitted to the hospital for treatment.

Students’ Allegations and Police Response

  • Students’ Claims: The students of SKMCH alleged that the police were drunk which is banned in Bihar (already been confessed by a police in a viral video) and brutally baton-charged them without provocation. They also claimed that the student detained earlier was beaten by the police while in custody.
  • Police Statement: Ahiyapur Police Station Head, Rohan Kumar, acknowledged the initial altercation between the 112 patrol team and the students. However, he expressed unawareness about the police responsible for the baton charge.
  • Later SP along with DDC has assured immediate action against the police officers involved or convicted in the incidence.

Growing Incidents of Violence Against Medical Personnel

This incident is part of a worrying trend of increasing violence against doctors and medical students. Similar incidents have been reported across various regions, raising concerns about the safety and well-being of medical professionals.

In light of the recent events, medical students of SKMCH have outlined several demands to ensure their safety:

  1. Strict Action Against Perpetrators: Immediate and stringent action against police officers involved in the assault.
  2. Protection Protocols: Implementation of robust protection protocols for medical students and professionals within hospital premises.
  3. Alcohol Testing: Regular alcohol testing for on-duty police officers to prevent incidents involving intoxicated officers.
  4. Grievance Redressal Mechanism: Establishment of a dedicated grievance redressal mechanism to address issues faced by medical students and staff.
  5. Awareness and Training Programs: Conduct awareness and training programs for police personnel to handle situations involving medical professionals with sensitivity and care.

The recent clash at SKMCH underscores the urgent need for improved measures to safeguard medical students and professionals, ensuring a secure environment for them to carry out their essential duties.
