AI for Doctors

AI for Doctors : New Delhi, December 30, 2025

AI for Doctors : In a significant step towards modernising medical education and clinical practice in India, the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has announced the launch of an Online Programme on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Medical Education for postgraduate doctors and medical faculty. The programme, scheduled to begin inJanuary 2026, aims to prepare medical professionals for the responsible and ethical integration of AI into healthcare delivery, education, and health systems.

According to the official guidelines issued by NBEMS, the programme has been designed specifically for postgraduate medical trainees, NBEMS alumni, and faculty members, with a strong emphasis on patient safety, ethical standards, accountability, and clinical judgment, rather than technical or programming expertise.

Focus on Clinical Judgment and Ethics

NBEMS has clarified that the course does not seek to replace clinical decision-making with technology. Instead, it positions AI as a clinical support system, stressing that final responsibility must always rest with the medical professional. Participants will be trained to critically evaluate AI tools for clinical validity, utility, bias, and safety, while also understanding legal, ethical, privacy, and cybersecurity challenges relevant to the Indian healthcare context.

The programme’s objectives include enabling doctors to decide when AI should be used—and when it should not, integrate AI outputs into patient-centered decision-making, and contribute effectively to multidisciplinary AI teams as clinical domain experts.

Structure and Key Features

As per the official notification dated 30 December 2025, the programme will consist of 20 live online modules conducted over six months, starting January 2026 . Key highlights include:

  • Live online sessions only (recorded sessions will not count for attendance)
  • No registration or course fee, making it accessible to a wide range of medical professionals
  • Teaching by faculty from eminent national and international institutions, including Mayo Clinic, Harvard University, University of Oxford, IISc Bengaluru, and IIM Lucknow
  • No requirement for prior technical or programming background

Eligibility and Certification

The programme is open to:

  • NBEMS ongoing trainees
  • NBEMS alumni (qualified from 2020 onwards)
  • Faculty of NBEMS-accredited departments
  • Other registered medical professionals interested in AI applications in healthcare

To be eligible for a Course Completion Certificate, participants must attend at least 75% of the classes live, with attendance marked both at the beginning and end of each session, and successfully complete an online assessment module. Those who attend sessions but do not meet certification criteria will receive a Certificate of Participation .

Attendance and Professional Responsibility

NBEMS has made it mandatory for participants to join sessions live, with attendance being validated only if marked at both entry and exit of each class. The guidelines also emphasize professional conduct, ethical practice, transparency, and academic integrity while engaging with AI tools discussed during the programme.
