In a significant move, the National Medical Commission (NMC) recently responded via mail to the Dean of Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences (SMIMS) regarding the clarification of new Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) guidelines and new passing criteria, published on 01.08.2023, these guidelines mark a pivotal shift in the medical education landscape. The notification emphasizes the importance of a clear understanding and seamless implementation of the updated standards of teaching, evaluation and passing criteria. The Mail also emphasized that the passing criteria will be applicable to all exams conducted after August 2023 for batch 2019 onwards.
Key Highlights of the Mail by NMC and the new guidelines :
- There won’t be any Grace Marks.
- There is no minimum score for Paper 1 / Paper 2. However Paper 1 + Paper 2 (Theory Total) they must score minimum 40%. Practical minimum is 40%.
- To pass students must score 50% of Theory total + Practical (Grand Total) provided they have scored 40% each in Theory Total and Practical.
- Despite scoring Theory Total Minimum (40%) and Practical minimum (40%) students will fail if they don’t reach Theory + Practical (Grand Total) minimum (50%).
- Similarly despite scoring Grand Total minimum (50%) if they don’t score Theory/Practical minimum they will fail.
