College of Medicine & Sagore Dutta Hospital, Kolkata
About
The College of Medicine & Sagore Dutta Hospital, established in 2010, has a rich history rooted in philanthropy. Originally founded as Sagore Dutt Charitable Hospital and Dispensary by jute merchant Sri Sagore Dutta, it served the socio-economically poor for nearly a century. The West Bengal government took over the hospital in 1958, later upgrading it to a State General Hospital. To address the doctor shortage, a medical college was sanctioned in 2010, with MBBS classes starting in 2011. It received MBBS recognition in 2016 and introduced paramedical courses from 2014, GNM nursing in 2017, and PG courses in 2019. The college expanded UG seats to 125 and PG seats to 35 in 10 disciplines by 2020. It also served as a dedicated Covid-19 hospital in 2020 while maintaining emergency services. In 2022, a College of Nursing was added, bringing the total intake to 125 MBBS, 35 PG, 40 paramedical, 100 GNM, and 100 BSc Nursing students annually. A Tertiary Cancer Care Centre is nearing completion.
