Students Demand Immediate Action, Transparent Review, Accountability and Written Assurance From Authorities

Patna: Serious concerns have been raised over the conduct of the MBBS 2nd-year examination under the Bihar University of Health Sciences (BUHS), with students questioning the examination schedule, the academic structure and the nature of questions reportedly asked in the examination.

In a detailed account shared following the examination, the student expressed frustration over what they described as an extremely demanding academic schedule, stating that the 2nd-year examination was conducted within approximately six months of the previous examination. Students further alleged that some questions went beyond the prescribed syllabus, raising concerns about whether students were provided adequate academic time and a fair examination environment.

The concerns have assumed significance because MBBS students spend months preparing for university examinations, often balancing extensive theoretical learning, practical training, clinical postings and internal assessments. Any uncertainty regarding examination schedules or the prescribed syllabus can therefore have a direct impact on students’ preparation and academic performance.

Students’ concerns deserve an official response

According to the student’s of BUHS , several students protested strongly against the conduct of the examination. The student described being caught between the pressure of the examination system and the protests by fellow students, ultimately submitting the examination paper before it was torn up by protesting students.

While individual accounts may differ and the allegations require verification by the competent authorities, the concerns raised warrant a transparent and time-bound examination by BUHS.

The central issue is not merely whether students were satisfied or dissatisfied with a particular examination. Rather, it concerns whether the university’s examination process is predictable, transparent, syllabus-aligned and structured in a manner that gives students reasonable academic preparation time.

Allegations of questions beyond the prescribed syllabus

One of the most serious concerns raised by the student relates to questions allegedly being asked beyond the prescribed syllabus.

If verified, such a situation would raise legitimate questions about the examination-setting and moderation process. Students prepare according to the officially prescribed curriculum and examination pattern. • Who was responsible for setting, reviewing and moderating the question paper.
• Whether the question paper underwent an appropriate scrutiny process before the examination.
• What action will be taken if any questions are found to have been outside the prescribed syllabus.
• What safeguards will be introduced to prevent similar concerns in future examinations.

Dr. Ritesh Srivastava, Secretary, DMA Bihar, stated: “Concerns raised by BUHS MBBS students regarding the short examination timeline and alleged out-of-syllabus questions demand immediate attention. I urge the authorities to conduct a fair and impartial investigation, fix accountability for any established lapses, and provide appropriate relief wherever required. BUHS must also ensure clear examination guidelines, adequate preparation time, strict syllabus adherence and a transparent grievance-redressal mechanism for students.”

Students need assurance, not uncertainty

For medical students, university examinations are high-stakes academic milestones. Uncertainty surrounding examination schedules, syllabus coverage or question-paper standards can significantly increase academic stress.

Therefore, students should not be left waiting indefinitely for clarification.

BUHS should issue an official communication to the affected students, clearly addressing the concerns and explaining the steps being taken. If an examination review is warranted, students should be informed about the process and timeline rather than being left dependent on rumours or informal communication.

Any remedial measure, if considered necessary after verification, should also be communicated transparently and applied fairly to all affected students.

Immediate action demanded

The concerns raised by students should not be dismissed simply as dissatisfaction with a difficult examination. At the same time, allegations regarding the question paper should not be treated as established facts without an official review.

The appropriate course of action is a prompt, impartial and transparent investigation.

Students are demanding that the competent authorities of BUHS should:

1. Conduct an immediate review of the disputed question paper.
2. Verify every questioned item against the officially prescribed syllabus.
3. Examine the timeline and academic schedule leading to the examination.
4. Fix accountability if any procedural irregularity is established.
5. Provide appropriate remedial measures wherever students are found to have been adversely affected.
6. Issue a written clarification and assurance to the affected students.
7. Establish a transparent mechanism for students to raise examination-related grievances.
8. Ensure that future examinations of BUHS strictly follow the notified syllabus, academic schedule and examination regulations.

A fair examination system by BUHS is essential

The issue ultimately goes beyond one examination. Medical education demands discipline, hard work and academic rigour, but students must also have confidence that the system they are working within is fair, predictable and accountable.

A difficult examination is not necessarily an unfair examination. However, concerns regarding insufficient preparation time, deviation from the prescribed syllabus or procedural irregularities deserve objective examination rather than dismissal.

The students’ demand is therefore simple: listen to their concerns, investigate the matter independently, establish accountability wherever required, and provide a clear written assurance that their academic interests will be protected by BUHS.

BUHS must act promptly so that students are not left feeling helpless or uncertain about the outcome of an examination that could have a significant impact on their academic progression.
