KDMCH Mathura :
January 24 : In a deeply troubling incident, several on-duty resident doctors at Kanti Devi Medical College and Hospital ( KDMCH Mathura ) were brutally assaulted by a mob of approximately 100 individuals in the hospital’s emergency department. This act of violence underscores the alarming rise in attacks on medical professionals across India, leaving the community both outraged and fearful.
The mob, identifying themselves as attendants of two Road Traffic Accident (RTA) patients, stormed into the emergency department around 12:30 a.m. Armed with sharp weapons, rods, IV stands, bricks, and mops, they launched a savage attack on the doctors who were attending to the patients. CCTV footage from the hospital captured the horrifying scene—doctors being grabbed by their collars, kicked mercilessly while on the ground, and subjected to verbal abuse and death threats.
Several doctors sustained critical injuries in the attack. Reports also indicate that the mob robbed the doctors of their gold chains and rings and issued threats to female doctors present during the chaos. Despite prior warnings to the police about a potential confrontation, no preventive action was taken, and hospital security failed to intervene.
A Pattern of Neglect and Inaction in KDMCH Mathura case :
Following the incident, the assaulted doctors approached the police to file a formal complaint. However, they alleged that no FIR was registered despite submitting a written complaint. In a letter to the hospital’s Medical Superintendent, the resident doctors criticized the failure of the security personnel, police, and hospital administration to protect them during the attack. They announced their decision to suspend medical services at the hospital until an FIR is filed and stringent measures are taken against the perpetrators.
IMA JDN strongly condemned the attack of KDMCH Mathura, calling it a “gross failure of law and order.” In a letter to the Mathura Police Superintendent, the IMA JDN demanded the immediate registration of an FIR against all individuals involved in the assault. Additionally, they called for enhanced security measures in emergency and critical hospital departments and accountability from the hospital administration and police authorities.
An Alarming National Trend
This is not an isolated incident. Over the past few years, there has been a disturbing increase in violence against healthcare professionals in India. Doctors working in emergency departments and critical care units often face aggression from patients’ attendants, particularly in emotionally charged situations. While healthcare professionals are expected to perform under immense pressure, the lack of adequate security and swift action by authorities has made them vulnerable to such attacks.
Recent studies and surveys have highlighted that over 75% of doctors in India have faced violence at some point during their careers.
A Call for Urgent Action
The KDMCH Mathura incident has reignited calls for stricter legislation to protect medical professionals. The IMA and other medical bodies have been urging the government to enact a central law against violence in healthcare settings, ensuring punishment for offenders. Additionally, hospitals must prioritize deploying adequate security personnel and installing surveillance systems to deter potential aggressors.
Healthcare professionals play a pivotal role in our society. The government, law enforcement agencies, and hospital administrations must work collaboratively to create a safe and respectful environment for doctors and healthcare workers.
As the doctors of KDMCH Mathura await justice, the incident serves as a reminder of the growing challenges faced by India’s medical fraternity.
