In a recent development, MBBS first-year students at medical colleges in Bihar have voiced their concerns regarding the implementation of National Medical Commission (NMC) guidelines (revised passing criteria under the new CBME guideline) by Aryabhatta Knowledge University (AKU). The issue stems from the disparity between the NMC directives and the approach taken by AKU in assessing student performance and results of 2022 batch.
The NMC, through a notification dated September 1, 2023 (F.NO. U/14021/8/23-UGMEB), outlined specific passing criteria for subjects with two papers. According to these guidelines, candidates are required to secure an aggregate of 40% in theory (combining Paper 1 and Paper 2), a minimum of 40% in practical exams, and an overall score of 50% of the maximum marks allocated for the subject.

However, the recent amendment to the results by AKU on February 18, 2024, has raised eyebrows among students as it deviates from the NMC directives. Instead of considering the aggregate score of both papers as stipulated by the NMC, AKU has opted to apply a minimum of 40% in each paper individually.
This discrepancy has left MBBS students in Bihar perplexed and anxious about the fairness and consistency of the evaluation process. While other universities across the country have smoothly implemented the NMC guidelines, AKU’s deviation from these standards has created a sense of uncertainty among students.
In response to this issue, students from various medical colleges in Bihar have come forward to express their concerns and seek clarification from the authorities at AKU. They emphasize the importance of aligning the evaluation criteria with the directives provided by the NMC to ensure transparency and fairness in the assessment process.
The Convenor of IMA MSN Bihar, Dr. Tanmay Kunj has also reassured the students that he will convey the message to the university and NMC for the immediate resolution. Vishwa Prakash (co-founder, MCD) and Mili Chourasiya (S.M. Director, MCD) has also said that they will continue to raise the issue for the justice of students.

The discrepancy in the implementation of NMC guidelines not only affects the academic prospects of students but also raises questions about the credibility and integrity of the evaluation system. It is imperative for AKU to address these concerns promptly and reconsider its approach to align with the NMC directives.
The burning question is that how such a reputed university is ignoring the new guidelines or is unaware of the new guidelines which was already communicated by the NMC almost a year ago and surprisingly they are still in the denial mode even after receiving the mail from the NMC just few days ago. Why it shouldn’t be a matter of shame for the officials of AKU for such negligence? Why it shouldn’t be a matter of non compliance and adherence to the rules & laws of the apex body along with hampering the academic loss and time of 2022 batch and why NMC is silent over the issue, why they are not taking any strict action over such a big blunder ?
As the academic community awaits a resolution to this issue, MBBS students in Bihar remain hopeful for a swift and equitable solution that upholds the principles of transparency and fairness in medical education.
