The Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) released a cautionary notice regarding Meftal, a widely utilised non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) for menstrual cramps and rheumatoid arthritis.
The advisory highlighted concerns about mefenamic acid, a component of Meftal, being linked to the initiation of Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms (DRESS) syndrome, a severe allergic reaction syndrome.
The alert aims to raise awareness about potential risks associated with the use of Meftal containing mefenamic acid.
The disclosure came after an initial examination of adverse drug reactions conducted by the Pharmacovigilance Programme of India (PvPI). The findings from this analysis underscored the need for heightened vigilance regarding Meftal, shedding light on potential adverse reactions associated with its use, particularly in relation to the development of DRESS syndrome due to mefenamic acid.
What is DRESS syndrome?
Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms (DRESS) syndrome , triggered by certain medications, can lead to severe allergic reactions, characterised by symptoms like skin rash, fever, haematological abnormalities, internal organ involvement, and lymphadenopathy.
Meftal-Spas, a commonly prescribed drug for conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, dysmenorrhoea, pain, inflammation, fever, and dental pain, has been implicated in these adverse reactions.
Healthcare professionals and patients are strongly advised to remain vigilant for signs of DRESS syndrome and other adverse drug reactions. Prompt reporting of such symptoms to the national coordination centre of the Pharmacovigilance Programme of India (PvPI) is crucial through various channels provided by the IPC.
What are the other side effects of Meftal?
Beyond DRESS syndrome, Meftal-Spas has been linked to various side effects, including
- abdominal pain, indigestion and dry mouth blurred vision,
- increased blood pressure
- swelling
- skin rash
- gastrointestinal complications such as stomach ulcers and bleeding
Prolonged usage of the drug raises concerns about potential risks of
- Infertility in women
- kidney problems
- cardiovascular events, particularly in individuals with pre-existing heart conditions.
