Career option other than MBBS/BDS ? explained!

The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) is the only test conducted in India for medical undergraduate courses. Undoubtedly the majority proportion looks for MBBS/BDS despite knowing the fact there is cutthroat competition. Lakhs of student appear for this exam and the number of candidates is also increasing drastically every year but the number of seats is not increasing at that proportion. Every student starts their preparation aiming government college seat of MBBS/BDS. But very few or more precisely less than 10% of students could make it possible, so question is ‘What about the rest of more than 90% students?’ Let’s talk about it in detail…

As we see the most demanding course after NEET is Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS). There are a lot of other courses too, which can be considered as a better choice other than MBBS/BDS. There is the list of courses below in which student can peruse as well after NEET.

Information about each course:

1. Bachelor of Medicine and a Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) 

Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery [MBBS] is a 5 years and 6 months professional undergraduate medical degree program including internship of 1 year. MBBS is a professional degree required to become a doctor, diagnose diseases, prescribe medicine, and conduct surgery.

2. Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS)

BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) is a 5-years undergraduate program. It is only professional dental course in India. It is a compulsory course for students aspiring to work as dentists at government or private hospitals. BDS mainly focuses on training and introducing students to the dental sciences and surgeries. The 5-year program involves 4 years of classroom education and 1 year of compulsory rotating internship. 

3. Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery(BAMS)

BAMS is an Ayurveda traditional healing art-based undergraduate medical program in India. BAMS course provides complete knowledge about ‘Ashtanga Ayurveda’ along with scientific advances in modern medicine along with extensive practical training. Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM) is the responsible body for admission to Ayurveda education at the undergraduate as well as the postgraduate level and for practicing Ayurvedic medicine in India.

4. Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery (BHMS)

BHMS- Bachelor in Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery. BHMS course covers the knowledge regarding homeopathic medical system, which involves the treatment of patients with the high dilutions of the homeopathic medicines mainly in liquid and tablet form to enhance body’s natural healing system. BHMS course duration is 5 years and 6 months which includes 1 year of rotating internship after completing the final examination.

5. Bachelor of Naturopathy and Yoga Sciences (BNYS)

BNYS-Bachelor of Naturopathy and Yogic Science. It is a 5.5 years undergraduate degree, focusing on naturopathy and the use of yoga in treating diseases. There is 1 year of mandatory internship after completing the 4.5 Year UG course. Naturopathy can also be called an alternative medicine that does not use drugs or medicines to heal or prevent. Thus, it is often non-invasive and also non-prescriptive. On the other hand, yoga uses the techniques of breathing, meditation and asanas to do the same.

6.Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery (BUMS)

Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery (B.U.M.S) is a full-time graduate course focusing on various types of Unani treatment. It is a 4.5-year bachelor’s program after that 1-year internship is compulsory; the program includes different types of exercises, surgery, diuresis, cupping, therapies, diaphoresis, Turkish bath, etc. 

7.Bachelor of Siddha Medicine and Surgery (BSMS)

BSMS- Bachelor of Siddha Medicine and Surgery. It is the study of medicine that falls under the AYUSH systems of medication. The study revolves around seven elements which are plasma, blood, muscle, fat, bone, nerve and semen. These seven elements are activated by air, heat and water. The BSMS duration is 5 years.

8. Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry (BVSc & AH)

BVSc AH is a 5½ years undergraduate program that comes under medical discipline. It deals with the study of medical diagnostics, and treatment of diseases of the animals. BVSc AH courses include jobs such as Veterinary Doctor, Veterinary Research Scientist, Animal Breeders, Veterinary Officers, Veterinary Surgeon, and Junior Veterinary Doctor and so on.

9. Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT)

Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT) is a 4-year degree program followed by 6 months of rotatory internship in the field of rehabilitative medicine. The course focuses on employing physical forces like heat, pressure, electricity, etc. to assist the body in healing itself.

10. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSc. nursing) 

BSc Nursing is a 4-year undergraduate course with a focus on training and skill development as mentioned in National Health Policy 2002. Students after BSc Nursing will become professional nurses capable of taking primary, secondary and tertiary care of people.

So, here are the all-possible courses which could be a better choice other than MBBS/BDS.
