Charak Shapath :
The Maharshi Charak Shapath replaced the old and outdated Hippocratic Oath originated from Greek tradition in 2022. The National Medical Commission (NMC) recommended that the Hippocratic Oath be replaced by the Charak Shapath in 2022.
The Maharshi Charak Shapath is an oath from the Charaka Samhita, a foundational Sanskrit text on Ayurveda attributed to Maharshi Charaka (1st century CE). Believed to be composed between 100 BC and 200 AD, this text serves as an encyclopedia of Ayurveda. The Charaka Oath outlines ethical guidelines that students must accept before receiving medical education. The Charaka Samhita, along with the Sushruta Samhita, forms the cornerstone of Indian medical science, covering medicine, ethics, and holistic healing principles.
The Charak Shapath replaced the Hippocratic Oath in Indian medical institutions as part of an effort to align medical ethics with India’s indigenous traditions and cultural heritage. Here are the key reasons for this shift:
- The Charak Shapath originates from Ayurveda, India’s ancient system of medicine, while the Hippocratic Oath comes from Greek tradition.
- The move reflects an effort to revive and promote India’s traditional medical ethics.
- It emphasizes self-discipline, service without greed, and the well-being of society.
- The Hippocratic Oath was written for a Western, ancient Greek society, which has different historical and social contexts.
- Charak Shapath is seen as more culturally relevant to Indian values and traditions.
महर्षि चरक शपथ ( In Hindi) :
हे द्विज ।। पूर्वाभिमुख होकर पवित्र अग्नि एवं विद्वानों की साक्षी में प्रतिजा करो कि-
मैं अपने अध्ययनकाल में संयमी, सात्विक तथा अनुशासित जीवन व्यतीत करूंगा करूंगी। गुरु के अधीन होकर पूर्ण समर्पित भाव से गुरु के कल्याण तथा प्रसन्नता हेतु पुश्वत् पुत्रीवत् आचरण करूंगा करूंगी। मेरा व्यवहार सतर्कतापूर्ण, सेवापरायण तथा उद्दण्डता और ईर्ष्या से रहित होगा। मैं अपने आचरण में संतोषी, आज्ञापालक, विनम, निरन्तर मननशील एवं शांतिसंयुक्त रहूंगा/ रहूंगी। गुरु के अभीष्ट लक्ष्य के प्रति सम्पूर्ण सामर्थ्य से प्रयत्नशील रहूंगा/रहूंगी। चिकित्सक के रूप में अपनी सफलता, यश एवं अर्थप्राप्ति के लिए मैं सदैव अपनी विद्या का उपयोग प्राणिमात्र के कल्याण हेतु करता रहूंगा/रहूंगी।
अत्यधिक व्यस्तता एवं विश्रांति की अवस्था में भी मैं दिन-रात रोगी की सेवा हेतु आत्मवत् तत्पर रहूंगा/रहूंगी। निज स्वार्थ एवं अर्थलाभ के लिए किसी रोगी का अहित नहीं करूंगा करूंगी तथा पर स्त्री एवं पराए धन की कामना नहीं करूंगा करूंगी। अनैतिकता मेरे विचारों में भी नहीं आएगी।
मैं सदैव मधुर, पवित्र, उचित, आनन्दवर्धक, सत्य, हितकारी तथा विनम वाणी प्रयुक्त करूंगा करूंगी, तथा अपने पूर्व अनुभवों का उपयोग करते हुए जान के विकास एवं नवीनतम उपलब्धि के लिए निरन्तर प्रयत्नशील रहूंगा/रहूंगी।
किसी स्त्री की चिकित्सा उसके पति अथवा आत्मीय की उपस्थिति में ही करूंगा। रोगी के परीक्षण के समय मेरा विवेक, ध्यान एवं इन्द्रियां रोगनिदान हेतु ही केन्द्रित होंगी। मैं रोगी अथवा उसके घर से सम्बंधित गोपनीय बातों का प्रचार नहीं करूंगा करूंगी। मैं मरणासन्न रोगी की विवेचना नहीं करूंगा करूंगी, क्योंकि वह रोगी अथवा उसके आत्मीयजनों को आघातकारक हो सकती है। मैं अधिकृत विद्वान होते हुए भी अपने जान की अभिव्यक्ति अहंकार रूप में नहीं करूंगा करूंगी, क्योंकि इससे रोगी के स्वजन तक अपमानित अनुभव कर सकते हैं ।
न त्वहं कामये राज्यं न स्वगै नापुनर्भवम् ।
कामये दुःखतप्तानां प्राणिनामार्तिनाशनम् ॥
मुझे न राज्य की, न स्वर्ग की, न मोक्ष की आकांक्षा है। मेरी आकांक्षा दुःख से तप्त प्राणी मात्र का दुःख दूर करने की है ।
Charak Shapath (In English) :
- During the period of study, I shall live a disciplined life with my teachers and peers. My action shall be guarded, service oriented and free form indiscipline and envy. In my dealings I shall be patient, obedient, humble, constantly contemplative and calm. I shall aim my full efforts and ability towards the desired goal of my profession.
- As a physician, I shall always use my knowledge for welfare of mankind.
- I shall always be ready to serve patients, even if I am extremely busy and tired. I shall not harm any patient for the sake of monetary or selfish gains, nor shall I entertain a desire for lust, greed or wealth. Immortality shall not emerge even in my thoughts.
- My dressing shall be decent yet impressive and inspiring confidence. My conduct shall always be appropriate, Pleasant, truthful, beneficial, and polite. I shall use my experience in actions appropriate for that time and place.
- I shall constantly endeavor to accomplish/keep updated with the latest developments in the field and widen my knowledge.
- I shall treat patient of gender other than mine in the presence of relatives or attendants.
- When examining a patient, my discretion, attention, and senses shall be concentrated on the cure of the disease.
- I shall not divulge the confidentiality related to the patient or family inappropriately.
- Although an authority (in my subject). I shall not display my knowledge and skill with arrogance.
