On one hand, the authorities aim to ensure that postgraduate medical seats do not go vacant; on the other, there is concern that excessively lowering the cut-off may dilute academic and professional standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bench observed that while preventing wastage of seats is a legitimate concern, the Court must be satisfied that the decision is not \u201cdrastically wrong\u201d or driven by any improper motive. Emphasising judicial restraint, Justice Narasimha remarked that the Court\u2019s conscience must be assured that there is no \u201cdevious reason\u201d behind such a significant policy shift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"604\" src=\"https:\/\/medcollegedarshan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/WhatsApp-Image-2026-02-06-at-1.59.57-PM-1024x604.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6660\" srcset=\"https:\/\/medcollegedarshan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/WhatsApp-Image-2026-02-06-at-1.59.57-PM-1024x604.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/medcollegedarshan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/WhatsApp-Image-2026-02-06-at-1.59.57-PM-300x177.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/medcollegedarshan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/WhatsApp-Image-2026-02-06-at-1.59.57-PM-768x453.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/medcollegedarshan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/WhatsApp-Image-2026-02-06-at-1.59.57-PM.jpeg 1206w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Details of the <strong>NEET PG 2025<\/strong> Cut-off Reduction<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The impugned NBEMS notice brought down qualifying thresholds to unprecedented levels:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>General\/EWS<\/strong>: from the <strong>50th percentile (276\/800 marks)<\/strong> to the <strong>7th percentile (103 marks)<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>General PwBD<\/strong>: from the <strong>45th percentile (255 marks)<\/strong> to the <strong>5th percentile (90 marks)<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>SC\/ST\/OBC (including PwBD)<\/strong>: from the <strong>40th percentile (235 marks)<\/strong> to the <strong>0th percentile (\u201340 marks)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The reduction to zero and even negative marks has triggered widespread concern among medical professionals and aspirants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Petitioners\u2019 Argument: Enough Candidates, No Justification<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Appearing for the petitioners, Senior Advocate <strong>Gopal Sankarnarayanan<\/strong> relied on existing regulations which permit lowering of minimum qualifying marks only when a sufficient number of candidates are not available in a particular category. He argued that this condition was not met in the present case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to submissions before the Court, while approximately <strong>80,000 postgraduate seats<\/strong> are available, more than <strong>1.28 lakh candidates<\/strong> already fall within the original qualifying percentiles (50th, 45th and 40th). On this basis, Sankarnarayanan contended that there was no justification to reduce the cut-off so drastically. He sharply criticised the reduction to negative marks, remarking that such a standard would paradoxically place even non-serious candidates in a better position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Higher Standards for Higher Medical Education<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The petitioners further stressed that postgraduate medical education demands stricter, not diluted, standards. They argued that lowering the qualifying benchmark undermines patient safety, public health, and the credibility of the medical profession. The plea also asserts that such dilution runs contrary to the objectives and statutory mandate of the <strong>National Medical Commission Act, 2019<\/strong>, which seeks to ensure quality and uniform standards in medical education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Constitutional Concerns Raised<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The petitions allege that the January 13 notification on <strong>NEET PG 2025<\/strong> is <strong>arbitrary<\/strong> and violates <strong>Articles 14 and 21 of the Constitution<\/strong>, which guarantee equality before law and the right to life. According to the petitioners, compromising merit at the postgraduate level directly affects the quality of healthcare delivered to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Lies Ahead<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Supreme Court has now directed NBEMS to place on record an affidavit detailing the reasons and data that led to the decision to reduce the qualifying percentile of <strong>NEET PG 2025<\/strong>.
