In a deeply disturbing incident that has reignited concerns about the safety of healthcare professionals, resident doctors at AIIMS Patna<\/strong> have announced the immediate shutdown of all elective services and threatened to suspend emergency services if urgent demands for justice and security are not met.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The uproar stems from a violent episode that occurred late on July 30<\/strong>, when Chetan Anand<\/strong>, sitting MLA from Sheohar, accompanied by his wife Dr. Ayushi Singh and armed guards<\/strong>, stormed into the AIIMS Trauma Centre. According to a press release by the Resident Doctors Association<\/strong> (RDA), the group forcefully entered the premises, assaulted security personnel, brandished a firearm, and issued death threats to on-duty doctors. One hospital guard was seriously injured after being struck with the butt of a firearm, creating chaos and panic in what is supposed to be a secure healing environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the gravity of the assault, no First Information Report (FIR) has been lodged. Equally alarming is the administration\u2019s lack of response or condemnation, which doctors say has left them vulnerable and demoralized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe cannot and will not function under threats to our lives and dignity,\u201d<\/em> the RDA stated firmly, stressing that the step to shut down services was not taken lightly but out of sheer desperation.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The RDA has placed four key demands:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Immediate FIR<\/strong> against the MLA, his wife, and their guards.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Deployment of permanent, adequate security<\/strong> at the hospital.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Public condemnation<\/strong> of the incident by the AIIMS administration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Implementation of strict protocols<\/strong> for safety of healthcare professionals.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    This isn\u2019t an isolated episode. Violence against doctors has been steadily rising across India, with physicians frequently facing physical assaults, verbal abuse, and threats from patients\u2019 relatives, political figures, and even law enforcement. The AIIMS Patna incident highlights a deeply unsettling reality \u2014 that even doctors working under the Government of India at a national institute are not immune.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    What\u2019s even more troubling is the administration\u2019s apparent silence. There has been no formal acknowledgment of the attack, no press briefing, and no written assurance to the traumatized doctors. The lack of accountability is now becoming a norm, not an exception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Healthcare professionals across the country are watching this case closely. Many are expressing solidarity with the AIIMS Patna residents and are demanding systemic reforms, including a central law for protection of doctors and healthcare workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The message from AIIMS Patna’s residents is clear: either the system protects its healers, or the system itself will be held responsible for the collapse of care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
