What could this pain mean?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Let&#8217;s take a deeper look at its root cause .<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is\u00a0 Tooth Hypersensitivity?<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>It is defined as <strong>short ,sharp pain arising from exposed dentine in response to stimuli<\/strong> particularly thermal , evaporative, tactile ,osmotic or chemical and which cannot be ascribed to any other dental pathology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>Prevalence<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>15-18% general population<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>78-98% in periodontal patients( related to gums)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Age (20-50 yrs peak) due to gingival recession<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gender &#8211; comparatively more females are affected than males .<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>Sign and Symptoms<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures, such as a cold breeze.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>short, intense bursts of pain when eating or drinking hot or cold foods and drinks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>pain and sensitivity when touching or applying pressure to the tooth area.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>discomfort when using certain oral products, such as abrasive toothpaste or mouthwash.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>sensitivity to acidic or sweet foods and drinks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>What causes hypersensitivity?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Exposure of dentinal tubules is a major cause of dentinal hypersensitivity. It can occur as a result of-<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>tooth decay<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>tooth fracture<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>worn fillings or tooth enamel<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>gum disease<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>receding gums<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Potential risks for dentinal exposure include &#8211;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"1\">\n<li>brushing the teeth too hard, causing wear and tear to the teeth and gums.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>consuming acidic foods and drinks, which can lead to the erosion (attrition )of the protective tooth enamel and cementum.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>shrinking or receding gums, which can occur naturally or periodontal disease<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>teeth grinding, which can wear down the enamel surface.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>using abrasive oral products such as whitening toothpaste or bleaching products.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>How do teeth sense hot or cold?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Dentine&nbsp; <\/strong>is&nbsp;&nbsp; the second layer of our tooth which is responsible for sensing the mechanical changes in and around the tooth surface.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dentine is composed of small dentinal tubules made up of <strong>hydroxyapatite crystals<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These tubules contain&nbsp;&nbsp; odontoblastic&nbsp; processes which directly end into odontoblastic body located on pulp.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a><\/a>Theories of dentinal sensitivity<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three theories have been proposed explaining how the dentine conducts<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;various mechanical stimuli to nerve fibres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Direct innervation theory<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Odontoblastic receptor theory<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hydrodynamic\/fluid movement theory<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"299\" height=\"224\" src=\"https:\/\/medcollegedarshan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2664\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Hydrodynamic theory <\/em><\/strong><em>is the most widely accepted one&nbsp; .<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First proposed by Gysi in 1900<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A fluid is present inside dentinal tubules,<strong> peritubular fluid <\/strong>which surrounds the odontoblastic processes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>According to this theory, rapid mechanical stimuli leads to shift in this fluid leading to conduction of impulse to nerve endings in the deeper part of dentine.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>Diagnosis<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It can be difficult to detect dentine hypersensitivity since its symptoms are similar to many other tooth ailments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clinical assessment is done by a dentist on the basis of physical examination a grading scale is set.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The dental professional may ask an individual to provide certain information, such as-<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>where the site of discomfort is.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>how often the pain occurs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>whether the pain resolves when a person removes the stimulus that causes it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the severity of the pain, using a pain scale.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Verbal rating scale<\/strong> is a simple scale based on the pain felt by the patient<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>&nbsp; 0- No discomfort<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&nbsp; 1-Mild discomfort<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&nbsp; 2-Marked discomfort<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&nbsp; 3-Marked discomfort lasting for more than 10 secs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>Treatment<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Various treatments are available for hypersensitivity, a dentist may recommend them in accordance with the severity of damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>&nbsp;Home remedies for dentinal hypersensitivity<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Oil pulling &#8211; with sesame and coconut oil<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chewing guava leaves as these have flavonoids which soothe toothache and provide anti-inflammatory properties<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Clove gel.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Garlic<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Saltwater rinse fights bacteria<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Capsacian rinse<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Turmeric contains curcumin which is a pain reliever<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Other treatments &#8211;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>(<\/strong> Advice of a practitioner needed)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This may include using a desensitising toothpaste<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fluoride gel<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A crown, filling, or bonding<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gum tissue graft<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Root canal (severe cases)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>Prevention<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Though dentinal hypersensitivity is a common tooth ailment it can be prevented by general oral care .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Maintaining good oral hygiene.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Correct brushing with small soft bristles in round movements.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Changing your brush every 2-3 months<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Not brushing immediately after a meal as this can soften the enamel<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoiding&nbsp;
