If left unchecked, the tumours can spread throughout the body and become fatal.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These cancer cells begin inside the milk-producing lobules of the breast. Though the earliest form is not life-threatening, later it can spread into nearby breast tissue (invasion), creating tumours that cause lumps or thickening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These invasive cancers can spread to nearby lymph nodes or other organs (metastasize) which turn out to be fatal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a><strong>Who is at risk?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Females<\/em> are more likely to develop breast cancer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Approximately 0.5\u20131% of breast cancers occur in men.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other factors includes <em>increasing age, obesity, alcohol and tobacco consumption, family history of breast cancer, history of radiation exposure, reproductive history (such as age that menstrual periods began and age at first pregnancy),etc.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;Approximately half of breast cancers develop in women who have no identifiable breast cancer risk factor other than gender (female) and age (over 40 years).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Some inherited high penetrance gene mutations such as mutations in the genes BRCA1, BRCA2 and PALB-2 greatly increase breast cancer risk.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a><strong>Signs and symptoms<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In most cases,people do not experience any symptoms when the cancer is still early. Later with advancement, combination of symptoms is observed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to WHO,symptoms can include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a breast lump or thickening, often without pain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>change in size, shape or appearance of the breast<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>dimpling, redness, pitting or other changes in the skin<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>change in nipple appearance or the skin surrounding the nipple (areola)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>abnormal or bloody fluid from the nipple.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>People with an abnormal breast lump should seek medical care, even if the lump does not hurt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most breast lumps are not cancerous. Breast lumps that are cancerous are easily treated when they are small and show no metastasis. It may show metastasis to other areas of the body and trigger other symptoms. The <em>most common first detectable site of spread is to the lymph nodes under the arm<\/em> although it is possible to have cancer-bearing lymph nodes that cannot be felt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over time, these cancerous cells may spread to other organs including the lungs, liver, brain and bones where newer cancer-related symptoms such as bone pain or headaches may appear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Early detection is the key, so regular screenings and self-exams are important.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/medcollegedarshan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/hhgg-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2046\" srcset=\"https:\/\/medcollegedarshan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/hhgg-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/medcollegedarshan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/hhgg-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/medcollegedarshan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/hhgg-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/medcollegedarshan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/hhgg-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/medcollegedarshan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/hhgg.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a><strong>Treatment<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Treatment procedure depends mainly on the <strong><em>stage and subtype<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp; of cancer. Staging is the key step for diagnosis as its helps to find out cancer spread to outside of the breast to lymph nodes<strong> (stages II or III)<\/strong> or to other body parts <strong>(stage IV)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Treatment includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>surgery &#8211;<\/em> for removal of the breast tumour<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>radiation therapy<\/em> &#8211; for reduction of recurrence risk in the breast and surrounding tissues<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>medications<\/em> &#8211; to kill and prevent spread of cancer cells, including hormonal therapies, chemotherapy or targeted biological therapies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Treatments for breast cancer are more effective and are better tolerated when started at early stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Surgery<\/em><\/strong> may include lumpectomy(removal of the cancerous tissue only) or mastectomy(whole breast removal). Lymph nodes are also removed at the time of cancer surgery for invasive cancers to prevent the cancer\u2019s ability to spread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Radiation therapy<\/em><\/strong> kills surrounding microscopic cancers left behind in the breast tissue and\/or lymph nodes after surgery . It plays a very important role in treating breast cancer. In early-stage, radiation can prevent a woman to undergo mastectomy. For later stages of cancer, it minimise the recurrence risk even when mastectomy has been done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Medicine<\/em><\/strong> selections are based on the biological properties of the cancer which are&nbsp; determined by special tests like tumour marker determination test. Majority of drugs used are already on the WHO Essential Medicines List (EML).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Targeted biological therapies <\/em><\/strong>are combined with <strong><em>chemotherapy<\/em><\/strong> for effective killing of cancer cells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The treatment of breast cancer in men follows the same principles of management as that for women.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The effectiveness of the therapies depends on the full course of treatment.
