The Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education & Research (IPGMER), originally established as Presidency Hospital in 1707 by the Council of Fort William, was the first hospital in Calcutta. Initially built for Europeans, it opened its doors to non-Europeans in 1770 and was later renamed Presidency General Hospital. In 1954, it was renamed Seth Sukhlal Karnani Memorial (SSKM) Hospital to honor a generous donor. Recognizing the need for advanced medical education in India, the government established it as Eastern India\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s first postgraduate medical institute in 1957. The inauguration was led by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, marking the hospital\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s transformation into a center of higher medical learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Over the decades, IPGMER has evolved into a premier institution for medical education, research, and healthcare. It offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and paramedical courses, producing skilled medical professionals across various disciplines. Initially functioning as a superspeciality referral hospital, it expanded its scope with the addition of key institutes such as the Bangur Institute of Neuroscience, the Institute of Psychiatry, and the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences. The institution also introduced a nursing school, a nursing college, undergraduate physiotherapy courses, and paramedical programs, further broadening its academic reach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the 21st century, IPGMER has transformed into a multi-superspeciality hospital equipped with state-of-the-art medical facilities. It now houses an advanced neonatal care unit, a Human Milk Bank, and specialized departments in genomics, neuro medicine, and digestive and liver diseases. With its continuous advancements in medical education, patient care, and research, IPGMER remains a leading center of medical excellence, serving patients from across the region while shaping the future of healthcare in India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
