Pay The Stipend To MBBS Interns or Don’t Have The Internship : Supreme Court !

In a recent development, the Supreme Court on Monday, February 26, has taken a firm stance on the issue of medical colleges charging exorbitant fees from students while neglecting to provide stipends to MBBS interns. The court has emphasized that if colleges demand huge amount as fees, they must ensure fair compensation for the interns who play a crucial role in the healthcare system.

The controversy revolves around the fact that many medical colleges charge around Rs 1 crore for the MBBS course but fail to pay stipends to the interns, who gain experience during their internship period. The Supreme Court has asserted that this practice is unfair and needs immediate attention. Justice Dhulia, remarked, “Either you pay them, or you don’t have the internship”.

Internships are a vital part of medical education, allowing students to apply their theoretical knowledge in real life medical scenarios. During this period, interns actively contribute to patient care under the guidance of experienced medical professionals. However, the lack of stipends creates financial hardships for these students who have already invested a significant amount in their education and a minimum of 5 years time as well.

The court’s directive comes as a relief for the students who have been struggling financially during their internship. The decision reinforces the principle that educational institutions, especially those in the medical field, should prioritize the welfare of their students.

The Supreme Court’s intervention has initiated a sight of hope for aspiring doctors, highlighting the importance of a balanced and ethical approach in medical education. It is anticipated that this decision will bring about positive changes in the way medical colleges handle the financial aspects of their internship programs, ultimately benefiting the future healthcare professionals and the healthcare system as a whole.

But, the major thing is proper execution along with monitoring whether the interns are being regularly paid or not. Because this has been generally observed the private colleges ignore the students interest despite getting all the guidelines and rules from the Government and the concern authorities. Now NMC and Health Ministry should come forward and make strict guidelines for colleges after the Supreme Court’s intervention and make a clear and transparent mechanism for the payment of stipend.
