Dr. Tanvi Suicide Case : In a major legal escalation following the tragic death of Dr. Tanvi, a postgraduate medical student in Dehradun, Advocate Satyam Singh Rajput has issued a strongly worded legal notice accusing Shri Guru Ram Rai Medical College of institutional harassment, academic victimisation, and abetment to suicide.

The notice, sent on March 27 on behalf of the victim’s father Lalit Mohan, names the college administration, including the Chairman, Director, Dean, and Head of Department Dr. Priyanka Gupta, holding them accountable for what it describes as a “systemic pattern of abuse and negligence.”

Serious Allegations in Legal Notice

According to the legal notice, the deceased, Dr. Tanvi, a third-year MS Ophthalmology resident, was allegedly subjected to:

  • Continuous mental harassment and intimidation
  • Academic victimisation, including manipulation of internal assessment marks
  • Threats of being failed in final examinations
  • Alleged unlawful monetary demands despite full fee payment

The notice claims that after a change in departmental leadership (HOD), Dr. Tanvi’s academic evaluation was deliberately reduced to zero, despite satisfactory performance, indicating abuse of authority.

It further alleges that Dr. Tanvi had repeatedly informed her family about coercion and threats, and had been under severe emotional distress shortly before her death.

Pattern of Institutional Negligence Alleged

The legal notice also highlights that this is not an isolated incident, pointing to a previous case in 2024 where another resident doctor allegedly died by suicide under similar circumstances of workload pressure and hostile work environment.

It accuses the institution of maintaining a toxic work culture, marked by:

  • Overburdened duty schedules
  • Lack of grievance redressal mechanisms
  • Unsafe and exploitative working conditions

Defamation & Cover-Up Claims

A significant portion of the notice criticizes the college administration for allegedly issuing false and defamatory statements suggesting that the deceased had prior mental health issues.

The notice calls these claims:

“Malicious, unsubstantiated, and aimed at shifting blame and protecting institutional reputation.”

It further alleges a coordinated attempt to suppress facts and shield responsible individuals.

Legal Provisions Invoked

The notice invokes multiple provisions under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including:

  • Section 108 – Abetment of Suicide
  • Section 356 – Defamation
  • Section 61 – Criminal Conspiracy
  • Section 238 – Destruction of Evidence

It also cites principles of institutional negligence and duty of care applicable to medical institutions.

Key Demands Made by Family

The legal notice demands the following actions within 7 days:

  • A detailed explanation along with academic and institutional records
  • Public apology and withdrawal of defamatory statements
  • Termination of Dr. Priyanka Gupta and concerned officials
  • Independent inquiry by an external committee
  • Preservation of all evidence including CCTV and communications
  • Compensation of ₹1 crore to the family

Failure to comply, the notice warns, will result in civil and criminal proceedings against the institution.

Background of the Case

Dr. Tanvi was found unresponsive in her car near the hospital premises in Dehradun. Investigations revealed she had administered a fatal dose of potassium chloride intravenously, leading to cardiac arrest due to hyperkalemia.

Her family has consistently alleged that prolonged workplace harassment and academic pressure drove her to take the extreme step.

Investigation Underway

Police officials have confirmed that a case has been registered based on the family’s complaint, and a detailed investigation is ongoing.

The incident has reignited concerns over the mental health crisis and working conditions faced by resident doctors across India, with many calling for urgent systemic reforms.
