Akash Pandey, MBBS Student Killed in Gorakhpur Hit-and-Run; Questions Raised Over Administrative Negligence

Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh:
A tragic road accident in Gorakhpur has sparked outrage among students and citizens after a 22-year-old MBBS student Akash Pandey lost his life when a speeding SUV (Toyota Fortuner) rammed into multiple two-wheelers on an overbridge. The incident has raised serious concerns about traffic law enforcement and administrative negligence, especially after reports emerged that the accused vehicle had 35 pending challans before the fatal crash.

The victim, Akash Pandey, a third-year MBBS student at BRD Medical College, Gorakhpur, was returning after Holi celebrations when a Toyota Fortuner allegedly driving on the wrong side of the road struck several two-wheelers. According to police, four riders were hit in the collision.

The impact of the crash was so severe that Akash Pandey was thrown nearly 15 metres into the air. He struck the railing of the overbridge and became stuck in it, reportedly hanging there for nearly 30 minutes before authorities reached the scene. He died on the spot due to the massive trauma.

Two other victims sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Police later identified the accused driver as Golden Sahni, a local property dealer. Using CCTV footage, authorities traced the vehicle’s registration number and arrested him. The SUV involved in the incident has been seized, and a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder has been registered.

However, the case has triggered widespread anger after it was revealed that the same vehicle had at least 35 pending traffic challans prior to the incident. This revelation has led to serious questions about how a vehicle with such a long history of traffic violations was allowed to continue operating freely on the roads.

Students and citizens have demanded a transparent and fair investigation into the incident, not only into the actions of the accused driver but also into the administrative lapses that allowed the vehicle to accumulate dozens of violations without strict action.

The death of a young medical student has deeply shaken the medical community and student groups, many of whom are now demanding accountability from the Uttar Pradesh government and local police administration.

Activists and students have urged authorities to ensure that the case is not diluted and that strict charges are applied so that justice is delivered to the victim’s family.
