DMCH in Turmoil: Principal Dr. Alka Jha Faces Backlash from MBBS Students Over ‘Unfair’ Sent-Up Process

DMCH

DMCH, Darbhanga: Darbhanga Medical College & Hospital (DMCH) has been witnessing a storm of protests over the past few days as MBBS students have raised serious allegations against Principal Dr. Alka Jha, accusing her of harassment and arbitrariness in the sent-up process for the upcoming university examinations.

According to students of DMCH, the college follows two simple and well-known rules for being sent up for the university exam:
A. 75% mandatory attendance
B. Passing the internal assessments

The students claim that most of them have fulfilled the 75% attendance requirement as per the biometric system, but Dr. Jha allegedly refused to consider biometric data as valid evidence, citing “technical errors” in the machine. This denial has sparked outrage among students, who allege that the administration is acting in a biased and non-transparent manner, with partiality being done in deciding who gets sent up for exams.

Students Demand Transparency & Fair Process

Students have formally submitted an application to the principal demanding:

  • A fair and transparent process for sent-up, attendance, and internal exams
  • Proper notification of internal examinations at least one month in advance on the official batch WhatsApp group
  • Clear communication of all rules and regulations related to eligibility

However, students allege that their pleas were met with neglect and indifference, leaving them with no choice but to protest for their legitimate rights.

FIR Lodged Against Students

Instead of initiating dialogue, the situation escalated when Dr. Jha reportedly lodged an FIR under multiple BNS sections against protesting students, seeking strict legal action. This move has further aggravated tensions, with students and medical organizations calling it an attempt to intimidate students rather than resolve the core issues.

Past Controversies Surrounding Principal

This is not the first time Dr. Jha has been in the spotlight. During the recent flood-like situation on the DMCH campus, she was criticized for failing to take timely action to mitigate the crisis, which had severely impacted both patients and students.

Med College Darshan, being a responsible and leading medico-student community news portal, condemning the events and we expect a fair investigation process :

  • Immediate suspension of Principal of DMCH, Dr. Alka Jha until a fair investigation is completed
  • Intervention by NMC and AKU to ensure justice and a transparent system
  • Involvement of medical organizations to mediate and safeguard both academic activity and patient care in DMCH.

We emphasize that academic justice and patients’ safety must go hand-in-hand, urging authorities to act promptly to avoid further disruption in medical education and hospital functioning.

Call for NMC & AKU Intervention

With exams approaching, students are demanding quick redressal of their grievances. They fear that arbitrary disqualification could jeopardize their academic careers and mental health. Experts say this issue highlights a bigger problem of administrative accountability in medical colleges, calling for a structured and transparent system for attendance, internal assessments, and sent-up procedures.
