North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMC&H), the first medical college in North Bengal, was established in 1968, envisioned by Dr. B.C. Roy and planned by Health Minister Ajit Kumar Panja. Initially named North Bengal University Medical College, it was renamed in 1978 under West Bengal government control.MBBS classes started in 1968 at North Bengal University and shifted to the current campus in 1972. Early batches completed clinical training at SSKM Hospital. NBMC&H gained Medical Council of India recognition in 1978.

North Bengal Medical College and Hospital, located in Sushrutanagar near Siliguri, is the largest healthcare facility in North Bengal and a key tertiary referral institute. Nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas, it is the closest medical college to Sandakphu, offering breathtaking views of Kanchenjunga. The serene campus, spread over 161 acres, is surrounded by tea gardens and the Balason River Basin, providing a pollution-free environment.

Serving over six districts and patients from Nepal, Bangladesh, and Bhutan, the hospital has a patient turnover exceeding a thousand daily, with an occupancy rate of 137%. It offers MBBS, postgraduate programs, and paramedical courses under the West Bengal Medical Council. The campus also houses North Bengal Dental College, a College of Nursing, and a police outpost, with buildings connected by 2.6 km of corridors.
